Antarctic krill and ecosystem monitoring survey off the South Orkney Islands in 2018 ((IMR-report no 16-2018)

Environmental monitoring along set transect lines off South Orkney Islands, Southern Ocean. Executed annual surveys (since 2011) to collect acoustic and biological data on krill, other macro zooplankton and data on krill predators from sector 48.2 in the Southern Ocean.

The surveillance and control programme for bonamiosis and marteiliosis in European flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, and blue mussels, Mytilus sp. in Norway in 2017 (Rapport fra Havforskningen nr. 17-2018)

The surveillance programme is carried out by the IMR according to a contract with the Norwegian Food Safety Authority. Samples were collected from four wild beds and one oyster farm, based on the present distribution of wild beds, and the structure of the oyster industry. Samples were collected in April/May and in October, in order to be able to detect Bonamia sp. and Marteilia sp. during the periods when the potential prevalence could be at the highest. No abnormal mortalities were observed in oyster populations during the surveillance.

Annual report on health monitoring of wild anadromous salmonids in Norway 2017 (Rapport fra Havforskningen nr. 26-2018)

Very low occurrence of virus infections in returning salmon although the same viruses are common in fish farming.
The IMR has investigated the occurrence of several viruses that are prevalent in salmon farming in returning salmon from River Etne during the period 2015-2016. The salmon is originated from cultivated smolt, which was tagged and released in Etne in 2013 and 2014.

PELFOSS – PELagic Fish Observation System Simulator (Rapport fra Havforskningen nr. 30-2018)

Through PELFOSS an Observation System Simulator has been developed for the Norwegian Sea. The simulator is based on modelled distributions of pelagic fish (Norwegian Spring Spawning herring and mackerel) from an ecosystem model. Sampling has been performed within the modelled distributions to simulate monitoring programs, and the results have been used to estimate stock sizes using StoX. The simulator has been tested on different cruise design.

Monitoring of contaminants in mesopelagic species from Norwegian waters – Mesopelagic fish from Norwegian Sea and Sognefjorden (Rapport fra Havforskningen nr. 36–2018)

In this study, the content of several contaminants and other substances potentially causing negative health effects was analyzed in different abundant mesopelagic fish species from Norwegian waters. Several pooled samples of three different species were taken in the Norwegian Sea and Sognefjord. The report is in Norwegian, however the summary, figure- and table headings are presented in English.

Modelling salmon lice copepodids along the Norwegian coast – comparing old and new particle tracking models (Rapport fra Havforskningen nr. 39–2018)

The purpose of this work is to evaluate the difference in the results from the old fortran LADiM particle tracking model and the new python version. Both models use the same salmon lice biological parameters and output from the models are hourly values of geographical distribution of infective salmon lice copepodids. We conclude that the comparison is satisfactory and the new LADIM is well suited for use in the traffic light system.
