DEMASK: Development and Evaluation of noise MAnagement Strategies to Keep the North Sea healthy.

The DEMASK project focuses on the issue of underwater noise in the North Sea. This international project aims to bring together researchers, stakeholders and  policy makers to develop recommendations for managing noise in the sea.

Noise is an important pollutant in the marine environment, which can negatively affect marine life in various ways. Noise can come from various human activities such as shipping and offshore wind farms. The North Sea is one of the world’s busiest shipping areas, and several countries have plans to develop more offshore wind farms in the North Sea. It is important that efforts are made to mitigate and manage man-made noise, to reduce the risks of negative impacts to marine life.

DEMASK aims to develop policy scenarios for managing the soundscape of the North Sea, and will evaluate the effects of these scenarios of marine biodiversity. Outputs from DEMASK will include recommendations for noise management strategies for achieving a well-managed soundscape.
