Deepwater and cartilaginous fish

The group focuses on harvestable deepwater species and ecosystems of the outer continental shelf and deep sea, and on cartilaginous fishes in all areas and depths.

Key tasks:

  • Monitoring and assessments of deepwater resources and cartilaginous fishes in Norwegian waters and internationally, including evaluation of impacts of deepwater fisheries on non-target species and vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs).
  • Baseline studies of the biology and ecology of target species, populations, and ecosystems in support of the group’s monitoring and assessment efforts.
  • Provision of science-based advice to national and international management through participation in relevant assessment working groups in The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) and other international science fora.

  • Beaked redfish (Sebastes mentella)
  • Golden redfish (Sebastes norvegicus)
  • Greater silver smelt (Argentina silus)
  • Roundnose grenadier (Coryphaenoides rupestris)
  • Roughhead grenadier (Macrourus berglax)
  • Ling (Molva molva)
  • Tusk (Brosme brosme)
  • Elasmobranchs (sharks, skates and rays) and rabbit fish
  • Meso- og bathypelagic fish
