Haddock is a gadoid that is easily recognizable by the black spot under the foremost dorsal fin. It is found on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean and is divided into the same stocks as cod, except that there is no haddock stock in the Baltic Sea.

All haddock along the Norwegian coast north of Stad, in the Barents Sea and on the west side of Svalbard belongs to this stock, although new genetic analyses suggest that the stock south of Lofoten are different from the haddock further north.
