Jeg har over 25 års erfaring med fiskeatferds. De siste 5 årene har jeg hovedsakelig arbeidet med fisks atferd relatert til fiskeredskap og fangstprosesser. Hvor jeg blant annet har arbeidet med utvikling av seleksjonsinnretninger i fangst redskap for leppefisk, med mål om å få ut undermåls leppefiskfisk, samt hindre oter og stor fisk i å ta seg inn i redskapen. Et annet pågående arbeid er bruk av lys for attraksjon av krill til torsketeine. Målet er å få teine fiske etter torsk til å bli et lønnsomt alternativ til dagens mindre miljøvennlige fiske metoder. Jeg er også engasjert i kjemisk - og fysisk utforming av line agn, hvor målet er å lage et kunstig agn basert på restråstoff fra fiskeindustrien. Hindre spøkelsefiske ved hjelp av nedbrytbar tråd i teiner er et annet tema jeg er engasjert i.
Mine hoved interesse er fiskeatferd, men jeg har også studert atferd hos andre marine arter. Tema jeg har arbeid mest med: Visuelt fødeopptak hos fisk og fiskelarver; Hvordan, lysintensitet, lysets sammensetning (bølgelengde sammensetningen), turbulens og vannets grumlighet påvirker fisk og fiskelarvers evne til å oppdage bytter eller predatorer; Fisks habitatvalg relatert til variasjoner i predasjonsrisiko og fôr tilgjengelighet; Reproduksjons atferd hos fisk; Læring og effekt av oppvekstmiljø på utvikling og atferd hos fisk. Foruten fiskens syn, er også lukt og hørsel noe jeg interesserer meg for.
Økosystem dynamikk: Gobidenes rolle i økosystemet langs Norskekysten, Østersjøen og i Benguela (et av verdens mest produktive up-welling’s områder på sydvest kysten av Afrika) er tema jeg har stor interesse for.
Fra mine 20 år som ansatt ved UiB har jeg erfaring som underviser, prosjekt leder og forskningsgruppe leder. Det ene prosjektet var et u-lands prosjekt, rettet mot utdanning av master og PhD studenter fra Namibia og Sør-Afrika. Jeg er nå engasjert i et UNIDO prosjekt i Sudan, hvor HI bidrar med opplæring av fiskeriforvaltning kompetanse for å bedre landets resurs forvaltning i Rødehavet.
