Fiskene vi kaller bruskfisk er haier, skater, rokker og helhodefisker (havmus). Bruskfisk har, som navnet viser til, et skjelett av brusk istedenfor bein.

I motsetning til beinfisk mangler bruskfiskene svømmeblære. Brusk er lettere enn bein og de kan i tillegg kontrollere flyteevnen med brystfinnene. De fleste artene har i tillegg en oljerik lever som kan utgjøre opptil 30 % av kroppsmassen deres og som bidrar til oppdrift.

Vi jobber med mange forskjellige hai- og skatearter samt havmus i norske farvann. Våre forskningsspørsmål spenner fra livshistorie og bestandsutvikling til utbredelse skift, bestands/ populasjonstilkobling og bevegelses- og hjemmeområder.

De viktigste haiartene vi  jobber med nå er pigghå, håbrann og brugde.

I tillegg samarbeider vi med kolleger i Bergen, Arve Lynghammar fra UiT og Nico Straube fra UiB om spørsmål relatert til skater og deres artsidentifikasjon på fiske- og forskningsfartøy.

Brugde

Brugdeprosjektet er et samarbeidsprosjekt mellom flere forskere i Norge og Skottland. Målet for prosjekt er å få bedre oversikt over fordeling og vandringsmønster i norske farvann. Derfor har vi lansert et elektronisk skjema for rapportering av brugdeobservasjoner, og vi håper at de som ser brugde rapporterer inn når og hvor observasjonen fant sted (både observasjoner av levende brugder eller funn av døde individer).
